Bicycle Silhouette

I pre-painted/stencilled a 24" x 24" wood panel and then created the image of a bike by painting the negative spaces (between the frame, wheels and spokes). The image is created with three colors of paint and some red chalk. The bike is an OS single-speed 29er. I'm still having fun!

I'm still doing bicycle images. Here I drew the bikes directly onto wood panels which had already recieved some paint or bits of old posters. I then developed the panels with more paint and word stencils. These panels are quite small.

Even more bicycles!

I've spent the last week in my studio drawing bicycles. As you can see in the photograph above I've been drawing on paper - it's less "precious" and therefore less intimidating. With all that practice I'm becoming more confident and I've started to draw straight onto wood panels which have already been prepared with paint or posters. Now it's starting to feel more urban!

I'm going to try projecting some of my drawings onto large panels next week - watch this space.

Urban Bicycles

When I go on my walks around the Mission district looking for "street stuff" to include in my paintings I notice how many bikes there are everywhere - tied to posts, parking meters, grilles and benches. So numerous that we stop seeing them. They are such an important part of the urban landscape that I should put more of them into the "urban patchwork" paintings I'm working on. To that end I have decided to spend some time drawing bicycles in my studio. It's hard - much harder than drawing the figure. All those funny brackets, cables and gear components. And wheels at an angle - aagh!
